UK firm part of Amazon offset project

Ashaninka territory, Peru
Ashaninka territory, Peru

A UK firm which helps people offset C02 emissions by selling trees is involved in a tree planting project in the Amazon.

Treeflights, located in the Cambrian mountains of Mid-Wales, allows people to offset carbon emissions by buying trees for £10 each via its website, www.treeflights.com.

The project is taking place in co-operation with the Ashaninka community of Cutivireni, which is located in Peru on the Rio Ene. It is being co-ordinated by Ecotribal, a UK-based organisation that collaborates with indigenous peoples to provide them with an income from sustainable products.

This is positive news - although I'm not sure if carbon offsets is the most sound way of going in terms of curbing global warming - it is great to see a company working with indigenous peoples rather then against them.

Treeflights´ new blog

Carbon offset company Treeflights has launched a new blog.

The Carbon Offset blog went live this month and will help promote Treeflights. But it will also provide information about environmental issues and in particular carbon offset news.

I first wrote about Treeflights nine months ago after owner Ru Hartwell contacted Blog Eclectic. His firm's website allows people to buy trees to offset CO2 emissions. Trees are planted in the Cambrian mountains of Mid-Wales, UK.

Summertime in Border country

The Cheviots, southern Scotland
The Cheviots, southern Scotland

I headed north last weekend to escape the rain of England and arrived in the Borders to explore southern Scotland a bit more.

This trip was a mix of being tourist and a walker through Roxburghshire. It is beautiful, rolling countryside next to the Cheviots, with plenty of forests and rivers too.

We begin in Kelso, near Jedburgh, at the Hazel Lodge Tearoom and Restaurant. A deep red business card says "Always a warm welcome" is on offer. Will this be so?

Wind and waveswept Saltburn

Hunt Cliff from Saltburn Pier
Hunt Cliff from Saltburn Pier

The small coastal town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea in the north of England has, thankfully, has escaped the evil hand of regeneration in the North-East.

Millions of pounds of public funds have poured into North-East towns and cities to develop infrastructures and cultural facilities. And while I'm keen on improving communities, some of these projects are readily acknowledged as having destroyed the very features that made northern towns and cities lovely and special. It makes you wonder how such plans were approved in the first place.

Saltburn is a Victorian town that's as delightful as it must have been 100 or so years ago. It features original Victorian shop fronts with intricate, decorative iron work supporting glass awnings above shops. Much of the original brickwork is in tact and many buildings incorporate finely made sash windows and beautiful tile work. This is the kind of architecture many North Americans would love to experience.
