What is news?

Many people are expected to write media releases as part of their job or volunteer work. But if you're not an ex-journalist or communications specialist, it can be hard to know where to begin.

If you want to understand media releases and the nature of publicity and promotion, the starting point is understanding what constitutes news.

Good press - a bit of luck, a lot of skill

I'm involved with a new business which has had some excellent media (press and radio) coverage in the past month.

The business is called www.datepositive.net and it's an online dating, friendship and support website for people with sexually transmitted infections/diseases.

A number of factors contributed to the good level of PR the business launch received. It is, as far as we know, the first such website of its type in the UK. And the focus of the website - providing a meeting place and resource for people with STIs/STDs - has drawn the curiosity and interest of journalists. You could say we've been lucky.
