A hello from a very distant cousin

I've had a fascinating email exchanged with Phillip Kennedy, a first-generation Australian who, it turns out, is a very distant cousin.

Phillip discovered my travel pieces about Ireland through Google. He is researching his father's maternal line, the Cox family from Midleton, Co. Cork, Ireland and plans to visit Ireland in September.

My grandfather, John Cox, was born in Cork City in 1894 and lived in Midleton as a boy and young man.  Through research documents from the Mallow Heritage Centre we've discovered that our great-great-grandfathers were brothers.

Sponsored walk to raise funds for the Newcastle Buddhist centre

Help support the Buddhist Centre
Help support the Buddhist Centre

A friend and I will do a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Newcastle Buddhist Centre this summer.

The walk will take place on either June 21 or 22 along the cost from Saltburn to Redcar return, so we'll cover about eight miles in total.

Money raised will go towards the running costs of the centre, which is a registered charity (reg. 1044379). The centre offers a range of courses on meditation and Buddhism.

It's a risk when you adopt a dog, but with Charlie I've been lucky. He's smart, has a fantastic personality and draws friendly reactions and affection from almost everyone.

Charlie settled in quickly and was thrilled to receive love and attention. Going out for walks became a highlight of his life. But it soon became apparent that something was wrong.

Lunar eclipse images

The show begins
The show begins

For those of you unable to see today's lunar eclipse, here are some pictures.

They were taken by my sister, Fran Caygill, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The eclipse occurred between 3.01 and 3.52 GMT and was a total eclipse of the moon, apparently the last one for seven years.

Weather conditions spoiled the chance to view the eclipse across most parts of Britain, but the BBC has some pretty spectacular shots taken from around the world.
