A great web designer

If you find a web designer and content manager who provides excellent customer care, then he/she is worth their weight in gold.

After all the horror stories I've heard from business acquaintances, and an early bad experience I had with a designer in York, I suspect there are only a handful of designers in the UK who are both good at their work and provide excellent service.

Latterly I've worked with one such designer and his name is Sam Lorenzelli.

From Royal Mail to royal pain

How long does it take to set up a mail redirection in the UK with Royal Mail?  Looking at this organisation's website you'd think a few minutes.

But when it goes wrong, it goes horrendously wrong, and it can be very hard and very time-consuming to fix.

I set up a redirection on the phone a few months back. I can't fault the guy I spoke to. He was friendly, polite and efficient. So it was all done very quickly. Until my post didn't arrive.

Phones4U uses questionable tactics

We stepped into Phones4U yesterday and fortunately came out with our finances in tact, but discovered with horror that the pushy salesperson is well and truly alive.

I've been using pay-as-you-go for my mobile phone, and spend about £20 to £25 a month on calls and texts. I wondered if a contract would be cheaper, and so it seemed to make sense to check out one of the UK's largest independent mobile phone retailers.

"Can I help you?" the trendy young salesman asked. "I'm just looking," I replied nicely, believeing that most people accept that means "Leave me alone and I'll get back to you if I need to."

Hi Sheelagh, that Phones4U story sounds oh so familiar. I went in with my partner, who wanted to actually downgrade to a less expensive tariff and keep her exitsting phone. We told the assistant what we wanted, he then proceeded to totally ignore us and tried to sell us a 3G phone with digital camera, video messaging and all the things SHE TOLD HIM SHE DIDN@T WANT OR NEED. I nearly punched him, he was so ignorant.

True, but that doesn't justify the hard sell, which often feels immoral to me.

There will always be customers who are spineless andwill sign anything and until that changes the hard sell will stay.

Motorway madness

I spent nine hours travelling yesterday. So you'll expect to read that I'm writing this post in Vancouver or Tokyo.

But no, my journey was from the West Midlands to County Durham in the North-East of England - a car journey that usually takes four to five hours. What took so long? According to radio reports a bad accident on the south-bound carriageway of the M1 meant the mortorway was closed from junctions 26 to 29 for most of the afternoon.

Along with hundreds of other travellers I was stuck in my car less than half a mile south of junction 28, the sign to Mansfield beckoning, but the exit closed as surrounding roads were gridlocked.

Hi Srikrishna, thanks for your comment. I suspect though that it would take more than one journalist to provide a solution to our road problems. Hopefully the data will one day be used productively and advance warnings will be in place when major hold-ups occur.

I hear a lot of complaints on every service being offered by the govrnment. How about working out a solution through to its logical end. You are a journalist.. why not get the data you need using Freedom of Information act and work out a logical solution to the road problems?
